Tipping Office Cleaners in Manhattan: A Guide for Office Managers

Individual tipping is not expected; a collective holiday gift is common practice in Manhattan and is warmly received. Your nightly cleaners are employees of a contractor, so this is a holiday appreciation question rather than a service-tipping one. A pooled office collection of $20–$50 per crew member for a small suite, or $50–$100 where the crew is dedicated, is the norm.

Amounts by Role

How to Run It

  1. Decide who pays. Company budget is simpler and more equitable than an employee collection. If you run a collection, make it genuinely optional and do not circulate who gave what.
  2. Find out how many people are on your account — ask your account manager for the names. A gift that misses one crew member is worse than no gift.
  3. Individual named envelopes. Cash is preferred and a handwritten note matters more than people expect. Gift cards are acceptable and administratively cleaner.
  4. Hand it over directly or leave it with the night supervisor. Do not route it through the vendor's head office.
  5. Give mid-December, before the holiday week — crews rotate and take leave, and a gift left for someone who is on holiday until January lands badly.

Two Things to Check First

Your vendor's gratuity policy. Some contractors have one, and some buildings restrict gifts to vendor staff. A two-line email to your account manager settles it.

Your finance team's position on cash. Cash gifts from a company to non-employees can carry reporting considerations. Gift cards are usually simpler administratively. Worth a quick conversation before December rather than after.

The Thing That Is Worth More Than Money

A named thank-you. Most nightly cleaning staff work in empty offices and never meet the people whose space they maintain. A note that uses their name, sent through the account manager, is remembered — and it is free.
