Tech and Startup Office Cleaning
Two things make a tech office different: static-sensitive equipment and SOC 2. Cleaning near racks and workstations requires ESD-safe HEPA-filtered equipment and no liquid applied directly to any surface. And SOC 2 Common Criteria CC6.4 requires you to restrict physical access to facilities — which means your auditor will ask about your cleaning vendor's access.
The SOC 2 Conversation Nobody Prepares For
Somewhere in your Type II audit, someone will ask who has physical access to your office outside business hours and how it is controlled. The honest answer for most startups is “the cleaning company, and we have never documented it.”

The Zone Model
Green — full clean: open floor, kitchen, meeting rooms, phone booths, restrooms, corridors. Yellow — clean with restrictions: desks with monitors and peripherals, where nothing is unplugged, nothing is moved more than necessary, and no liquid is sprayed on any surface. Red — no entry: server room, IDF and MDF closets, security room. Red zones come off the master key and no cleaning vendor gets a key to them, ever.
ESD Is Not Theoretical
A person walking across carpet can generate thousands of volts of static; sensitive components are damaged well below that. Standard vacuums near rack space are a genuine risk. We use ESD-safe HEPA H13 filtration equipment, isopropyl applied to the cloth rather than sprayed on the surface, and no compressed air anywhere near racks.
What Still Needs Cleaning in a Server Room
Off-limits does not mean never cleaned. Raised-floor plenums accumulate dust that ends up in intake fans and should be cleaned by a specialist, typically annually, escorted. Rack exteriors are handled by IT or by an escorted specialist. General janitorial staff should be nowhere near either. The distinction is worth writing into the exhibit so nothing gets neglected by default.

Our SOC 2 auditor asked about janitorial access. What do you provide?

That is normally the whole of what CC6.4 evidence requires for a cleaning vendor.
Will anyone go into our server room?
No. It is excluded by policy, it comes off the master key, and no credential is issued for it. If the room genuinely needs cleaning — raised-floor plenums do accumulate dust that reaches intake fans — that is a specialist job performed escorted, on a schedule, and it is not part of nightly service.
Do you clean monitors and keyboards?
Screens and peripherals are wiped with 70% isopropyl applied to a microfibre cloth — never sprayed onto the device. Nothing is unplugged and nothing is moved beyond what is needed to clean the desk surface around it.
